Routes

Algeria: The Hautes Plaines Traverse

The High Plaines in the north of Algeria, sandwiched between the Tell and Saharan Atlas ranges, offer a surprising opportunity to see another side to the country. I’ve written up a 890km off-road route here, which can be completed in 7 – 10 days.

Algerian desert riding redux: Exploring the country’s Saharan south off-road

In autumn 2023, I spent two months in Algeria, exploring off-road routes by motorbike in the country’s south, venturing deep in to the central Saharan desert.

This guide summarises the twelve best of those routes for those who are interested in undertaking a similar trip of their own. This is best read in conjunction with the below guide to logistics.

Visiting southern Algeria independently: a logistical guide

From September to November 2023, travelling down to and around Algeria’s Saharan deep south independently has been almost impossible for non-Algerians for the last twenty years or so.

Here’s a guide to the challenges I faced in doing so succesfully, and how I met them.

Exploring Armenia’s back country trails

In June and July 2022, I spent five weeks riding and exploring Armenia’s backcountry and trails, entering from Georgia in the north-east, heading south down the eastern side of the country to the Iranian border, before making my way back up to Yerevan on the western side.

In this guide, I’ve tidied up and summarised and uploaded GPX files of the routes I took into 8 sections for anyone who is considering a trip there. Read on here.

Coming soon: The top trails in Georgia you may not have heard of

You don’t have to look far online to find all the usual suspects so far as the ‘best routes’ for riding in Georgia goes. And if you’re interested in checking out the new Trans Euro Trail route there, it can be hard to know where to start. But after spending two months in-country last summer, I found that there’s so much more than that there. Full write-up to follow.

Coming soon: Trail-bagging in southern Bosnia, Kosovo and northern Albania

Bosnia, Kosovo and Albania have all taken off in popularity for trail riding in recent years, with there being so much to explore, relatively close to home. Here’s some of the best routes I found in those countries, riding a return leg from Georgia and Armenia in the summer of 2022. Full write-up to follow.
